This series contains letters mainly from Joseph, Elizabeth, Jane and Mehetabel Newman and their spouses and children, a brother who lived in Louth, Lincolnshire and his wife Sarah. Initially the letters appear to have all originated in the Auckland area, but after the 1860s (when the children of the original settlers had reached adulthood) there is a sprinkling of letters from other parts of the country, particularly Dunedin, Christchurch, Thames and Cambridge. There is also a few letters from England.
