Description

The collection consists primarily of letters to William and his wife Sarah from friends and relations in New Zealand. However there are also a number of letters of a business nature, and personal and legal papers relating to William's life in England.

Joseph, Elizabeth, Ann, Jane, and Mehetabel Newman emigrated to New Zealand in the 1840s. William, their brother, never settled, but made several visits to the colony where he had business interests. Through marriage William became related to the Rev Thomas Fairburn, the Rev George Buttle, William Atkin (father of the Rev Joseph Atkin), and the Ewen family
