The collection also includes photographs by Benno Thiem of Hokitika.

Images taken as part of the work of the studio feature West Coast scenery, gold industry, settlements, ports, shipwrecks, and local activities.

Includes images only in negative format depicting: the opening of the Coal Creek coal flume at Blackball [circa 1932?], the Inkster shop in Greymouth, the flooding of Sawyer's Creek off Marlborough Street, Greymouth, other flooding scenes, and small town street scenes on the West Coast [circa 1950s-1970s].

The collection also includes papers and photographic negatives and prints which relate to the personal and family life of Inkster and Quinn. Glass and film negative images featuring Lawrence and Hilda Inkster, and Thelma and Joseph Quinn, show them on family outings and trips to Auckland, Lyttelton road tunnel, Christchurch, Nelson, and Westport, relaxing and socialising at home, and at family events such as birthday parties and weddings. Includes images of a house alteration, a 1950s wedding [possibly Thelma and Joseph Quinn], and a 1970s wedding [possibly Marie Quinn]. Other individuals are shown, mostly unidentified, and including Miss Anne Watson of Runanga.

Source of title - Title supplied by Library

In 1879 photographer James Ring established a studio in Greymouth, West Coast. The success of his commercial catalogue of West Coast scenes enabled the business to expand to include two more studios in Hokitika and Reefton. In 1924 he amalgamated with Greymouth photographer Lawrence Andrew (Laurie) Inkster, the firm being known as Ring & Inkster until Ring's retirement in 1929. After World War Two, Inkster passed management of the studio to Joseph Quinn.

Inkster's daughter Thelma married Joseph Quinn, and they continued running the photographic firm on the West Coast until the 1970s when they shifted to live in Wellington bringing the studio collection with them. Marie Quinn is Thelma and Joseph's daughter.
