By: Hadfield, Octavius, 1814-1904
Reference: MS-Papers-10731
Description: These letters were written by Octavius Hadfield to his brother, Charles, and sister, Amelia, during the period 1862 to 1872, mainly from Otaki. They contain information on family and church matters and comment on the current political situation in New Zealand, particularly being concerned with the wars and the actions of Grey, Gore Browne and Fox. Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - These letters were transcribed by Christopher Lethbridge from photocopies of the originals which are held at qMS-0899 and qMS-0900 (Vols 3 and 4) Octavius Hadfield was a missionary with the Church Mission Society and in 1839 was the first priest to be ordained in New Zealand. In November 1839 he began his work at Waikanae and Otaki which was to remain the base for much of his work establishing Maori missions. He held strong opinions on purchase of Maori land and the constitutional rights of Maori and gave much advice to Sir George Grey during his term of office.
