Gibb, John, 1831-1909

Artist and builder. Born near Glasgow, Scotland. He received training as an artist in the studio of the Scottish painter John Mackenzie of Greenock. His first wife died in childbirth, leaving no issue. His second wife was his cousin, Marion Menzies. Three daughters died of scarlet fever in Scotland in 1873. The family, with the remaining three sons, emigrated to Canterbury in 1876, settling in Christchurch. Gibb painted in oils and watercolours. He exhibited with the Otago Society of Arts and with the Canterbury Society of Arts after the latter was founded in 1880. His work is widely held in New Zealand galleries and museums. His oldest son, John Walker Gibb was a picture framer in Christchurch, working from the site that became the United Services Hotel, corner Colombo Street the southern side of Cathedral Square. His second son, William Menzies Gibb was an artist. His third son was named Hubert Buchanan Gibb. John Gibb died in Christchurch in 1909.
