Description: Transparencies of woolsheds in New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the location, and sometimes the date of construction, of the woolshed. Dates and photographer name are sometimes annotated. Title supplied by Library. Slides are not dated. Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in a metal case labelled 'Woolsheds slides', with 12 compartments, each able to hold approximately 8 slides. No arrangement order has been identified. Quantity: 24 colour original transparency/ies. Physical Description: Colour transparencies in plastic and cardboard slide mounts. Processing information: Slides have been removed from container and put into archival pockets, following the original order, from left to right and top to bottom.

Description: Photographs taken circa 1880s by James Ring, photographer based in Greymouth. Scenes in Greymouth and nearby include views of severe flooding (p 3-5, 7); loading ships at the wharf showing hydraulic cranes raising hoppers of coal, and rolling stock laden with coal for transportation. Three shipping photographs including the SS Gerda wrecked on the Greymouth Breakwater in June 1888; the SS Mawhera ashore on North Beach, Greymouth in 1886, and the SS Rosamond crossing the Greymouth Bar. Beyond Greymouth views include the Grey River, Rocky Island, Brunnerton and the Brunnerton Bridge, and the West Coast Road. Then views of Lake Brunner, Refuge Island and Mitchell Falls. The Teremakau [now Taramakau] River is next, one view showing the road bridge, and one showing the flying fox (wire bridge) leading over to the Teremakau Hotel. These are followed by scenes along the Otira Gorge, including Warnock's Nob, Westley's Creek (Wesley Creek), and Starvation Point, before reaching Porter's Pass, Broken River, Arthur's Pass and the Devil's Punch Bowl Falls. The last sequence show Grasmere Station, Castle Hill Station (with one view of snow gates) and Craigieburn Station; the town of Cass; Bealey, Bealey Hotel, and Bealey Gorge, Lake Pearson and Lake Mapourika. Others show a group of four men with laden bicycles; a group of men and women in a large horse-drawn coach with the boulder-strewn hill behind; the Waimakariri River; and a farm building in an area of tussock. Description: Slip inside front cover reads "This album was given by Sir Julius von Haast to Lady von Haast on 21st November 1868. The scenes in it are of Mt. Cook; the Otira; J.D. Enys at his station, Castle Hill; Sir Julius & Lady von Haast & H.F. von Haast in their garden at Gluckauf, Avonside, Christchurch; Rakuia [i.e. Rakaia]; Sumner with Haast in front of Cave Rock; Hokitika; Christchurch scenes". Two photographs on page 45 have hand-written captions by Julius von Haast's son H.F. von Haast. One is of St. Mary's Church (Heathcote), and the other shows the von Haast family at their home at 62 River Road, Avonside, 1868. This inscription reads "Mr. B.W. Patterson, the Oamaru Woosted & Woollen Mills Ltd. sent me this photograph, labelled "Dr. von Haast & family, 62 River Road, Avonside, 1868, & wrote that it was 'a photo taken by my grandfather of your father's old house in Chch.' They show views of Canterbury and the road to the West Coast, including the houses and farm buildings at Castle Hill Station (home of John Davies Enys), and those at the Orari Gorge Station (home of Charles George Tripp). Landscapes mostly show the route from Porter's Pass, past Mount William, through the Bealey Valley, Arthur's Pass, the Ragged Range, Otira Gorge, Orari Gorge, the Rakaia River, and views of Mount Cook (Aoraki) and Mount Sefton.
