Trimmer, Jon Charles (Sir), 1939-2023

New Zealand dancer of note, dance administrator and dance director. Born in Petone, Wellington. Educated at Wellington Technical College Art School. At 18 years old he began dancing for the New Zealand Ballet 1958 to 1959. He then moved to London, England, to train at Royal Ballet School and dance with Sadler's Wells Theatre. Returned to New Zealand in 1962 to tour with the New Zealand Ballet and continued to perform in the company's lead roles for many years.

He also danced with the Australian Ballet (1965-1966) and Royal Danish Ballet (1968-1969), and performed in television and film roles.

Resident of Paekakariki, Wellington. Known as 'Jonty'. He was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to ballet in 1974, and a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours List of 1999.

Son of Charles William Trimmer and Lily Arrowsmith of Wellington. Married to dancer and ballet mistress Jacqui Trimmer, nee Oswald.
