Campbell, Charles, 1854-1943

Invercargill photographer. Born in Scotland, 12 October 1854, he arrived in Dunedin in 1862 aboard the ship Seville. He was a pupil of John Gully, and partner in the firm Hart, Campbell & Co in Invercargill, 1879-1885. He practised in Queenstown ca 1889, and returned to set up a studio in Tay Street, Invercargill, which he operated 1893-1925. He was also an amateur artist. He died in Eastbourne, Wellington, 1943. Description: Five photographs taken by C A Campbell [Charles Campbell?]. They include two portraits, one of `Margot'; and one of `Arthur, taken by himself by holding a long "string" attached to his toe from his camera at the Macandrew's Bay "Batch"'. The other three are outdoor scenes in the Invercargill and Dunedin areas. Two show the Botanical Gardens in Invercargill, one with the dome of thr Basilica seen in the background, the other of a creek in the Botanical Gardens.
