Stanley, Owen, 1811-1850

Naval officer and marine surveyor. In 1838 he sailed to Port Essington in northern Australia and in 1840 assisted in the foundation of Auckland and surveyed the harbour. His wash drawings and watercolours of New Zealand in 1840 are in the Tasmanian Art Gallery. Stanley was in Wellington aboard HMS Britomart, as its Captain, arriving 3 September 1840. In 1847 he returned to Australia in command of HMS 'Rattlesnake', and for three years was engaged in survey work along the southern coast of New Guinea. Captain Stanley was the eldest son of Edward Stanley, later Bishop of Norwich. [AJCP Handbook Pt 8]
