Born Wanganui; attended Wanganui Collegiate School and Otago University; Rhodes Scholarship in 1923 to Oxford University; bronze medal 1924 Paris Olympics; member International Olympic Committee and British Empire and Commonwealth Games Federation; service with Royal Army Medical Corps in World War II; surgeon to George VI 1946-1952; Sergeant-Surgeon to the Queen 1952-1967; knighted 1957 and created a life peer in 1973 following his term as Governor-General. Description: Sketch shows the costume of a wedding director in Germany in about 1800. Three different views are shown: in the left foreground is a three-quarter length view of a man in a collarless charcoal jakcet, open to reveal a red waistcoat, black cravat, and a belt with a large buckle. He holds a stick with a bunch of foliage at the top of it, and there is a sprig of the same foliage in the band of his broad-brimmed black hat. At the right is a full length sketch of the same man, showing his blue leggings, and at centre back a very preliminary outline sketch with the red waistcoat being the only coloured part. Description: Dr Ernest Edward Porritt, his wife Ivy Elizabeth Mckenzie, and their sons Arthur and Charles, in a trap outside their villa at 59 Ingestre Street, Wanganui, circa 1904. Photograph taken by Frank J Denton. "Born in Picton in 1870 Ernest Porritt trained in medicine in Edinburgh. He settled in Wanganui where he practised as a surgeon. Dr Porritt was active in a number of community organisations and in 1907 became a founder member of the Wanganui Automobile Association, and later its President." (Information taken from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display). Exhibited in 'Darling, I'm Home!' exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, 1 June - 5 July 1999.
