Roots, Thomas, 1828-1912

Born in Kent, England. Came to Wellington on the 'Alma' in 1857. Settled in Wanganui. Resided at Springvale in a large eight-roomed house. Mrs Roots was the daughter of Mr Sales, a well-known gamekeeper of Surrey. Had 12 children. Description: Mr and Mrs Thomas Roots and their twelve children in front of their home at Springvale, Wanganui, in the 1870s. Photograph taken by William James Harding. "Thomas Roots arrived in Wanganui in 1857 and was employed as the County foreman. The house began as a two room cottage and was enlarged at various times to accommodate an expanding family. Dormer windows allow light into the upper bedrooms. The verandah is decorated with a "union jack" balustrade and fretwork brackets and frieze. To protect the small children a gate secures the porch."
