Description: Views of wellington, some of its principle streets, and in particular some of the new buildings constructed in the late 1950s and 1960s. General views of the city taken from Mount Victoria and the harbour shoreline show the central city and give views of the waterfront and parts of the Town Belt. There are coastal localities such as Kau Bay and Wellington heads, a view of Rongotai and the Airport, and a view across the southern Hutt Valley looking west. Another group of images relate to forests and forestry. These include land clearance, stands of Pinus radiata, machines moving logs, and a fire engine. Others record a trip in the South Island, possibly the West Coast. There are views of hills covered in native forest, rivers, lakes and mountains. One group of images were taken in Rajasthan, India. These include towns, palaces, fortifications, temples, and the Taj Mahal. Photographed by Martin Shute in the 1950s and 1960s Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). It has been suggested that Gold's 'Otahau' may be intended to be Otahuhu. However, Otahuhu, is at the narrowest part of the Auckland isthmus and the topography of the area shown here is not like that of Otahuhu. Description: Seven photographs of pinus radiata plantations and associated activities. Two prints are labelled and captioned on the reverse, and identified as belonging to the New Zealand Forest Service with W J Wilson as the photographer. One of these is of Fletcher's Mill at Ruatahuna. The other shows the process of rip-sawing a rimu log at the same mill. Also included are two labels which were once affixed to the reverse of unidentified prints. These prints do not appear to be part of this collection. Some prints are associated with caption sheets which had been hinged to the reverse of the print with adhesive tape.

Description: Damage caused by Cyclone Ofa, Samoa. Mainly record the effects of the cyclone on vegetation. Photograph record of different communities of native plants in an unidentified location. Not dated. Photographed by Geoff Park. Geoff Park was sent to Samoa by the Department of Conservation in February 1990. The purpose of his work there seems to have been to help in the development of a forest reserve programme and assess the effect of over-cutting and deforestation. The date on the photograph packets is 4 March 1990. Cyclone Ofa hit Samoa on 2 February 1990. Quantity: 58 colour original photographic print(s). Survey camps, rivers, waterfalls, family, and friends

Description: Many of the photographs were taken when H E Girdlestone was working as one of a survey team in the Taihape area. Views of the survey camps variously descibed as near Taihape, on the Hautapu River, as Oroua Bridge, Mataroa Township, Raketapauma, and Rangiwaea Block. He has included scenic views of native forest from some of these and other locations. Most notably he has taken photographs of many waterfalls on the rivers and streams in the area. Many of these are on the Turakina river. One called Rereaupiko Waterfall is formed where the Mangoiwa Stream falls into the Hautapu River. There are also views of the Whanganui River and one of a load of passengers on the "Wairere," a Whanganui River boat. Other scenic views have been taken in the Trentham area, Upper Hutt. These include a stream and native forest, the Hutt River, and cattle in pasture. Other locations around the Hutt Valley and Wellington are a bridge over a stream in the Wainuiomata water reserve, Young's Gardens Karori Wellington, and Views of the South coast looking towards and from Sinclair Head. There are local volunteer military units who participated in a marching competition on the 5th of October 1901. Those named are the "Highlanders", "Kelburns," "College Old Boys," "Civil Service," and "Post and Telegraph." Finally there are many images of family, friends and collegues. These include a group of adults and children at a house in Featherston and shows people playing croquet, members of a survey team in a tent, Girdlestone and a fellow worker engaged in chopping down a large forest tree, groups of young women and men in their sunday best, a group of men in fancy dress playing instruments, the children and teacher of Mataroa School photographed outside what is probably the school room in March 1901, and people in kayaks and canoes on the River Avon Christchurch.
