Description: Material that was originally found in between pages of a sketchbook of watercolours by Thomas Ryan. Predominantly photographs by various, mainly unidentified photographers, collected circa 1891-1920s. Some prints have annotations on the reverse by Cowan and others. Some prints are of artworks, including one of a painting by Thomas Ryan. Some annotations have Cowan's name and address, some appear to give instructions for inclusion in publications, some identify the subjects. Contains images of Maori Chiefs, including one of Mahi Poki Orakei, and one of Wahanui Huatare and his wife, in some images facial moko have been drawn on the print. Also other images, including depiction of a ridge pole of Te Whaia te Motu meeting house, Ruatahuna, and of King Koroki's carved house at Ngaruawahia. One image of a Maori woman in front of a house is annotated in Cowan's hand "Taken at Maketu 1900", and in another hand "Maori matron and her home. Amy K. Wilkinson, Kapiti Island". One image is of Mr Rowley Hill wearing uniform and medals. One image is of a woman with baby wrapped onto her back, likely to be Rihi Te Heuheu, daughter of the ariki, Tureiti Te Heuheu Tukino V.; annotation reads "A daughter of the Heuheus" [family]. One image of Mount Edgecumbe. Some other loose material including a map of the area around Lake Rotorua from the Hautere Forest down to Lake Okaro with place names pasted on, and a newspaper clipping with a picture of a Russian doorway "carved in pine-wood". Description: Album of newspaper and magazine cuttings, photographs, and prints of paintings in colour and black & white, mostly of Maori subjects, with some images of geographically interesting sites in New Zealand, including Mount Tongariro, Lake Waikaremoana, and the Waimangu Crater. The Maori material includes prints of paintings by Goldie, and prints of paintings of Maori by T. Ryan, some of which are copies of works by Goldie. There is a print of a painting by T. Ryan, showing Tomika Te Mutu, painting done from an original sketch by Horatio Gordon Robley. There are many publicity photographs of Maori, showing clothing, particularly cloaks, and showing various activities in Maori pa, including weaving, firelighting, poi dances, and waka poi. Also includes images of Maori waka on the Waikato River; 2 pages of Maori rock carvings, found in a cave shelter on the Kaingaroa Plains in 1926, and one on Maori god-sticks (Pou whakapakoko).
