Martin, Josiah, 1843-1916

Teacher, educationalist, lecturer, photographer. Known years of operation as a photographer 1881-1912. (Auckland City Libraries Photographers database) Opened a studio with WHT Partington (see photograph PA2-1114 and DNZB). After partnership was dissolved, he opened another studio, but later sold the portrait business to Charles Hemus, so he could concentrate on topographical and ethnological subjects. Took photographs in Fiji, Samoa and other Pacific Islands which he appears to have visited in 1898 and 1901 (in 1901 he travelled with S Percy Smith). (From DNZB). Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Images include several Maori groups, Maori kainga, meeting houses, carving; a large number of views of mud pools, geysers, hot springs, and in particular views of the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera eruption in 1886. Other views show areas of the South Island, including Dunedin City, Oamaru, Christchurch; and the North island including Auckland, Thames District (a number showing aspects of gold mining in the area). Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1880s by various photographers including James Bragge and Josiah Martin. Photographs of the Manawatu Gorge were taken by James Bragge, some of which show the horse and carriage in which Bragge carried his equipment. There is one photograph of English explorer and adventurer Captain Speedy who spent many years in Abyssinia and other parts of Africa, and who came to New Zealand in 1864, where he fought with the Waikato Militia before returning overseas. He is shown wearing Abyssinian costume (p 15). Description: Includes photographs of Maori artefacts in museum context. Possibly created by James Edge-Partington, an anthropologist who studied artefacts in New Zealand and the Pacific. This volume is in the same style of album, with similar photographs and articles as Webster album 4 (PA1-o-519) which has Edge-Partington's named bookplate inside the front cover. Studies of a variety of artefacts including an instrument giving a decoy call for kiwi; a sea leopard's tooth carved and worn as a pendant (from Stewart Island); whale teeth pendants; weapons; tools; carved waka, prows of waka; carved meeting houses; Te Kooti's house "Te Waho"; carved storehouses; a Maori kite; eel traps and fish hooks. Description: Album of scenic views of Tasmania, Sydney and wider New South Wales, and of New Zealand, both North and South Islands. Views of lighthouses include Derwent Lighthouse (Tasmania), Macquarie Lighthouse (South Head, Sydney), and Farewell Spit Lighthouse (Tasman Region, New Zealand). The New Zealand photographs are nearly all taken by Josiah Martin, and include one that is a collage of scenes he photographed, and one of Maori weapons, with captions to say they were deposited [in Auckland Museum] by Captain Gilbert Mair. Description: Album of pressed ferns, most of which are used to frame images of New Zealand, but some pages consist solely of pressed ferns. The photographs show New Zealand scenes, and include two postcards of collages. One has the legend "Maoridom" and at the base "The old order changeth" with a photograph of Maori king Tawhiao, and various artifacts including taiaha, cloaks, and two preserved heads of Maori. The other shows portraits of a number of Maori men and women, and views of Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Among the views of new Zealand scenery are images of the White Terraces in eruption, the Pink Terraces, Manawatu Gorge, Dunedin, Queen Street (Auckland), Lake Ada, and Tois Tois [sic] Island on the Clinton River, Lake Te Anau.
