Born in Garrison, Ireland and came to New Zealand after demobilisation from the Royal Engineers in 1919. Employed by the Post and Telegraph Department, he became involved in union and Labour Party affairs. Deputy-Mayor of Ohakune 1932-1935, then in 1940 was elected as the Labour Party's national secretary-treasurer. He was MP for Petone 1946-1967, Under-Secretary to the Prime Minister 1947-1949, Minister of Railways and Post-Master General 1957-1960. See `Who's who in NZ' 1964 8th edition.
