Description: Artist Julia Lynch (Sister Mary Lawrence) painting a portrait of Upper Hutt Arts Society president, Eric Brown, in the lounge Bar of the Quinn's Post Hotel, Upper Hutt. The artist is surrounded by mirrors which allowed views of her at work to be observed by the audience. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer on the 25th of June 1971. This event was staged by the Upper Hutt Art Society and the city's Save The Children Fund sub-branch to raise money for the fund. A life size oil painting measuring 36" x 28" it is a charming impression of the sitter...She wears the decorations of the CBE, the French Legion of Honour, the Brazilian Order of the Southern Cross and the 1937 Coronation Medal. The portrait has been purchased by the British Petroleum Company of New Zealand Ltd and is to be submitted for the Paris Salon later this year...The portrait bears her signature as well as that of the artist." Description: Life-size seated portrait of M. J. Kennedy, Managing Director of the Wellington Gas Company, painted in the year of his retirement. The subject is shown in characteristic pose with his right shoulder slightly raised, his left hand holding his lapel. He is dressed in a dark three-piece suit and has a gold watch-chain. M. J. Kennedy lived in Island Bay and was Managing Director of the Wellington Gas Company, from 1921 until his retirement in 1953. His father and two of his sons also worked for or managed gas companies. Physical Description: Oil on canvas board 923 x 716 mm (sight) Provenance: The artist's fellow nun in the same convent was the subject's sister-in-law and the artist knew Mr Kennedy and asked to paint his portrait. The painting was shown at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in 1954. The portrait passed by descent to the subject's grandchildren, who donated it to the Library.
