Description: Life-size seated portrait of M. J. Kennedy, Managing Director of the Wellington Gas Company, painted in the year of his retirement. The subject is shown in characteristic pose with his right shoulder slightly raised, his left hand holding his lapel. He is dressed in a dark three-piece suit and has a gold watch-chain. M. J. Kennedy lived in Island Bay and was Managing Director of the Wellington Gas Company, from 1921 until his retirement in 1953. His father and two of his sons also worked for or managed gas companies. Physical Description: Oil on canvas board 923 x 716 mm (sight) Provenance: The artist's fellow nun in the same convent was the subject's sister-in-law and the artist knew Mr Kennedy and asked to paint his portrait. The painting was shown at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in 1954. The portrait passed by descent to the subject's grandchildren, who donated it to the Library.
