Wilkes, Owen Ronald, 1940-2005

Internationally renowned peace researcher. In the mid-1960s he campaigned against the Vietnam War and in 1968 became active in the anti-bases campaign. He has worked in peace research institutes in Oslo and Stockholm. See Dominion Post Obituaries, (Thursday May 26, 2005, B7).

Description: Records of the organisation Scientists Against Nuclear Arms (N.Z.) (SANA) A large proportion of the collection comprises official documents obtained by SANA from the United States government under the United States Freedom of Information Act. Also includes correspondence and other papers created by SANA relating to the New Zealand aspects of nuclear, chemical and biological warfare, with emphasis on the controversy over the question of the presence of nuclear weapons and propulsion on visiting naval vessels. Associated with the SANA material are also papers from Owen Wilkes and the Centre for Peace Studies, Auckland University, which are mainly concerned with the storage and disposal of chemical weapons in the Pacific region, especially at Johnston Atoll. Accompanying the donation was a comprehensive list, detailing the contents of each SANA box. The organisational files of SANA, although listed in the inventory provided, are not held with the Library. Source of title - Supplied by Library Arrangement: The collection has been divided into four series, reflecting the original division of the collection as arranged by SANA. The organisation Scientists against Nuclear Arms New Zealand (SANA) was founded in 1983. Two founder members, Peter Wills and Robert E White, who later also founded and became first Director of the Centre for Peace Studies at Auckland University, were instrumental in arranging for the records to be donated to the Library .
