Description: Contains material relating to the British Himalayan Expedition of 1952. This includes correspondence, a newspaper clipping, shipping information, invoices, and lists of equipment and suppliers. Inward correspondence includes letters from L P Kirwan at the Royal Geographical Society and Bank of New Zealand. There is a list of equipment suppliers as well as a separate list of photographic materials being supplied to the expedition by Ilford and Kodak. There is an invoice from Benjamin Edgington (Silver and Edgington Limited) and a list of equipment and supplies from Andrew Lusk & Co Ltd. There are notes on letterhead from the Swiss Mount Everest Expedition of 1952. Also contains material relating to the Indian Cho Oyu Expedition of 1958, including a letter from Keki Bunshah and a letter from the mother of Keki Bunshah to Miss Lowe (George Lowe's sister). Description: Drafts, notes, and letters relating to Amherst's translation of the narrative of Gomez Catoira, purser and supercargo of the first expedition led by Alvaro de Mendana from Peru to the Solomon Islands in 1567. Includes holograph notes, draft translations and correspondence, as well as two photographs. Also includes issue of the `Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society' for June 1888, which includes an article by Woodford on his own exploration of the Solomon Islands. Title supplied by Library. Lord Amherst of Hackney translated the narrative of Gomez Catairo, who served on the 1567-1569 voyage of Alvaro de Mendana from Peru to the Solomon Islands as the supercargo. Between 1888 and 1898, Charles Woodford, the first Resident Commissioner of the Solomons and an authority on the Solomon Islands, commented, annotated and identified places in the translation. Description: Contains papers relating to the accounts of the New Zealand Himalayan Expedition of 1951 and the personal finances and accounts of Harold Earle Riddiford, 1951 to 1953. Also some material relating to the 1951 British Mount Everest reconnaissance expedition. There is some correspondence. Includes New Zealand Himalayan Expedition ledger with receipts, invoices, and correspondence tipped in. Loose papers include Bank fo New Zealand statement of accounts, invoices, audit vouchers receipts, international reply coupon, and a cheque book stub. Examples of receipts include from the Badrinath Dispensary, Scott, Aitken & Cox account, receipt of payment for photographs of Mount Everest Reconnaissance from the Royal Geographical Society, an Alpine Sports Depot account, and a receipt from Michel Ober Skiwerkstätte, Sportgeschäft. There are a number of accounts relating to travel expenses. The expenses largely relate to expedition costs but there are some personal receipts, including for Ansell, Fowke Limited Motor Engineers in Wellington from December 1952. Inward correspondence includes letters and telegrams. One telegram is from Stevenson regarding the offer from Shipton for members of the party to join the British Everest expedition. There is also is a letter from Ilford regarding the printing and mounting of photographic prints taken by Riddiford. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Material arrived at the Library in box "1" in a clear plastic file with note in pencil describing the contents as "Inventory #9". Loose invoices were folded in a brown paper envelope.
