Description: Rough hand-painted designs for backdrops to be used for a performance of 'Te Rakau ahi', by Edmond Murray. The designs are for the elements of Fire (the burning finger nails of Mahuika refer to Maui's theft of fire from the gods), rain and water (represented by the rain-sea-evaporation cycle), air (represented by a ship and a whale), earth (referring to how Maui fished New Zealand from the sea) and energy (Represented by sunrise). A sketch shows how the backdrops were to be displayed on stage and their relationship to other stage props and to the 'story teller's box'. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
