Description: Views of the Mangatarera Stream and Mount Holdsworth opens a record of a climb to the summit of Holdsworth. The party consists of six women and about five men. There are views of the stream and the swing bridge leading to the Holdsworth track; several shots of the Mountain House with the climbing party arranged along the veranda, and Mr McGregor's party who had arrived on horseback to fix the water tank; the climbing party grouped in the bush on the way up the mountain and on the open alpine ridges; a surveyors tent in the alpine tussock; the party eating beside the Holdsworth Trig; views of the Tararua Ranges from the summit of Mount Holdsworth. Interspersed among the main image groups are photographs of a trip to Rotorua. This involved a group of people in two motor cars. There are images of the Hamurana Stream and Springs at Rotorua, and of children diving for pennies at Whakarewarewa. Views of mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, the Mangaehuehu Stream, the Crater Lake and the crater on Ngauruhoe, and mountaineers crossing the ice field on Ruapehu and climbing Ngauruhoe. There is a view of Matterhorn Peak the name of which was changed to Girdlestone Peak in 1922. Two images of a surveyors' camp in the Waimarino Bush. The Tern Arch and Little Hawke's Crag on the Buller Gorge road. A view of Lake Tarawerea from the top of Mount Tarawera. The final photograph is a view along the beach to Pencarrow Head, Wellington. Pasted inside the front cover is a cutting from `The Weekly News', Wednesday, December 26, 1945, entitled `New Zealand's highest memorial' by JWG, describing the renaming in 1922, of Matterhorn Peak (Tongariro National Park) to Girdlestone Peak in honour of Hubert Earle Girdlestone after he was killed in action in August 1918. Description: The entrance from Evans Bay, Wellington Harbour, to the tunnel built by J. C. Crawford to drain Burnham Water, a lake in the centre of Miramar Peninsula. The entrance to the tunnel is cut into a cliff and supporting beams are built around the opening. A small hut stands to the right of the tunnel and a path winds over the hill-top to the right. Rocks, flax bushes and a small cabbage tree are distinguishable in the foreground and there is a small rowboat tied to a stake at the water's edge, in the centre foreground. Hataitai or Whataitai was the earlier name for Miramar Peninsula The preliminary sketch for this sepia watercolour is a pencil work held at A-229-023, with an almost identical title. Description: View from the south end of Evans' Bay, (close to the site of today's airport) looking along Miramar Peninsula, past a small hut and the entrance to the tunnel dug by J. C. Crawford to drain Burnham Water (a former lake in the centre of Miramar Peninsula), along steep cliffs to the north. There is almost no beach below the cliffs, since the beach area was lifted by the 1856 earthquake. The hills of Roseneath and of Wadestown and Ngaio are visible in the distance. Description: Family photographs of the William Hughes Field family, their home in Everton Terrace, Wellington, with views of Wellington and the harbour taken from various streets nearby. One group of images taken from Kelburn Park in February 1897 show the ship (with an escorting flotilla) in which Lord Glasgow was leaving New Zealand after his term as Governor of New Zealand. A few images show scenes in Christchurch. The yacht `Sunbeam' (privately owned by Lord Brassey) is shown in Wellington Harbour in a number of views. Several photographs shows areas on the outskirts of Wellington. Views fom Pukerua of the hills to the north and Kapiti Island; Otaihanga (with one of a Maori family at their home); Upper Hutt, showing Mr and Mrs Sarjeant's backyard, Mr and Mrs Barber's orchard, and two views of a farm owned by Mr [Martin?]; the coast at Island Bay, and fishermen and their huts at Island Bay. Description: Photograph album titled 'The Tararua Track - Woodside to Otaki' containing black and white photographic prints, primarily showing male figures outside huts on the Tararua range. Some of the album pages are captioned: "up Mt Reeves"; "spring below Reeves"; "Top of Reeves"; "over Reeves"; "Tauherenikau"; "Tau"; "Alpha Hut"; and "Alpha above Bush". Also includes photographs of rivers, hilltops, and mountain ranges. No figures have been identified. Title taken from item. Quantity: 1 album(s) containing 57 black and white photographic prints.. Physical Description: String-bound album with grey pages and a green cover, 25 x 17.5 cm. Provenance: Originally donated to the Library by the estate of Sir Thomas Hunter in 1953. In 2021 the album was found in the Tararua Tramping Club's archive amongst their lantern slide collection and returned to the Library on 21 January 2022. It is not known how or when the album left the Library's possession.
