Birdwood, Lord, 1865-1951

British Soldier. Born at Kirkee in India 13 September 1865. Educated at Clifton College Bristol, and at Sandhurst. Served as a soldier in India from 1885 to 1899, and in South Africa on Lord Kitchener's staff from 1899 to 1902. He was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1911, and in 1912 served as Secretary of the Indian Army Department. In November 1914 Kitchener appointed Birdwood to command a corps of Australian and New Zealand troops in Egypt. The Corps soon became known as the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps or ANZAC. In 1919 he was created Baron Birdwood of Anzac and Totnes in recognition of his wartime services. He died 17 May 1951.

They include views of Australian and New Zealand troops marching along The Strand watched by large crowds; dignitaries, including King George V, leaving the memorial service held at Westminster Abbey; and two in Gallipoli, one of wounded soldiers waiting to be transported and the other of New Zealand graves. The collection also includes one photograph from the Second World War of the staff of the Radio Development Laboratory, which was probably on Majoribanks Street, Wellington, and the Governor-General Sir Cyril Newall. In 2003 the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) decided to mark the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign by arranging for the publication of an edition of Lieutenant Colonel William George Malone's First World War diaries and letters - `No Better Death : The Great War Diaries and Letters of William G. Malone", edited by John Crawford with Peter Cooke. As part of this project, the NZDF also undertook to provide the Alexander Turnbull Library with a new and complete transcript of the Malone collection including the diary material and letters not reproduced in `No Better Death'. Description: Shows an early morning scene in June/July 1915 looking across the crowded dugouts and bivvies of ANZAC Cove, while smoke rises from the breakfast fires. View from just outside General Birdwood's HQ dugout (bivvy in foreground with sloping roof), and shows some of his staff officers. The man seated with a pipe is a colonel in Birdwood's headquarters. Watson's Pier is the nearer double pier. The Casualty Clearing station on the shoreline at right is shown by the Red Cross flag. Looking south to Hell's Spit in background, with Plugge's Plateau at left, showing Godley's Terrace (housing Austrralian and New Zealand HQ) near the top of it just below the skyline. Factual details supplied by Chris Pugsley, prior to purchase. Horace Moore-Jones painted a similar scene in his 1915 Gallipoli sketches.
