Description: Shows the Vaitepiha River on the Taiarapu Peninsula, Tahiti, 1777. A Tahitian man and woman stand on flat land to the left, a river in the centre. On the river is a canoe and across the river is a village. Tall hills in the background. Acquired with B-091-005 and 006. These drawings, squared up for reproduction, ar considered by Dr R. Joppien to be Webber's preliminary drawings for pl. 5, 6, and 7 in his Views of the South Seas (London, 1808 [i.e. 1809]). The watermark in B-091-006 was in use in the early 1790s (see TL 3/1/1, 13/3/85). Dr J.C. Beaglehole believed them to be copies. Other Titles - Vaitepiha Title and ascription from pencil inscription on verso, which continues: "Sent to Dr Bett of Nelson by H. Saxe Lyndham, London, at the end of 1939 and presented by Dr Bett to the Turnbull Library, 1944". Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
