Description: Album of photographs, some prints, some contacts from 35mm film, taken by Professor John Salmon in Wellington. Most of the images describe his use of different camera lenses and filters. Many of the scenes are taken from Professor Salmon's window at Victoria University of Wellington, showing different moods in different weather patterns. They include early morning, afternoon, and night views, northerly wind and southerly wind cloud patterns, including a southerly storm. He also has a large number of images of Wellington Harbour and wharves, again taken in different lights, showing ships, reflections and buildings. Other sequences show views of the Hutt Valley, Silverstream, and Glenmore Street in Wellington, many taken on misty early mornings. The last scenes are coloured photographs showing some of the decorations erected for the Royal visit of Queen Elizabeth II, in January 1954. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Chiefly ships, but showing one view of the Salt works in Edithburgh, several of trees in Edithburgh during a visit in 1910, colour notes, clouds, seagulls, trees, one view of H. M. S. Esk in 1860. The artist was a commander in the Royal Navy. He joined the New Zealand public service in 1871 and became the first director of the Meteorological Service in 1900. Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1933 and 1958. There are various sequences as follows: Museum trip to Lake Waikaremoana, December 1946; Holiday trip in 1937 which included Mohaka, Lake Waikaremoana and Urewera Country; Cass-Torlesse biological trip, February 1936; South Island trip, March 1939; and a Southern Lakes and Hollyford Valley trip in January 1940. The holiday trip in 1937 includes photographs of the Mohaka Viaduct under construction. At the beginning of the album a photograph shows Lake Waikaremoana after 21 years of deterioration due to state Electricity Department actions. This image was taken in January 1958, from approximately the same spot as one taken in February 1937. The Cass-Torlesse biological trip includes an image of "vegetable sheep" (page 48). Description: Lantern slides of birds taken circa 1929-1950s. One photograph is a hand-coloured copy of an original taken by Frank Hurley and another a copy of an image by Herbert Ponting, but otherwise photographers are unidentified. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. Images show terns nesting, a black-billed gull nest in a stump, and a young black-billed gull on the Mercury Islands. A pied shag is photographed on a coastal rocky island [Marotiri?], the gannet colony on Horuhoru Rock (including nests) is shown in two slides, and gulls are shown on the water at an unidentified location. Set also includes a hand-coloured copy of a photograph by Frank Hurley shows a King Penguin on Heard Island, Antarctica, [ca 1929-1930?] and a copy of a Herbert Ponting image shows Tera Nova cook Thomas Clissold and surgeon Edward Atkinson pulling a seal-baited fish trap from a hole in the ice [ca 1911].
