Description: Contains research notes, typewritten and handwritten waiata and newspaper clippings. Includes `A Maori love-song': Whakapukupuke ai au-e! Te roimata i aku kamo...; and an article about `The death leap of Tikawe' with annotations. Also includes `Tangi song' chanted by Takarongi [Takarangi] Mete Kingi and others at the tangihanga ceremony over the late Premier, at Parliament House, Wellington, June 21st, 1906: Whakaronga [whakarongo?] e te rau, tenei te tupuna o te mate, ka iri kia au, i tipu i te Reinga... Another `Tangi song' sung by Wi Pere and other East Coast natives: Haere ra e Koro! Koutou ko matua - unuhia i te rito o te harakeke ka tu i te aroakapa... Also a `Ngai Tahu dirge' sung by Timoti Whiua and Tioti Ropitini [George Robinson] of Wairewa Little River, Canterbury: Pu ma uru, e riringi mai nei-i-e!... Letter to Cowan by P Buck dated 20th Dec 1922, discusses Cowan having loan of Buck's France diaries and Gallipoli diary. Description: Research papers relating to Ngai Tahu history, particularly from around the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula and two photographic prints. Includes handwritten notes from an interview with Tare Tikao [Teone Taare Tikao] entitled 'Evening at Rapaki' and some hand-drawn sketches of the hills and landscape of Banks Peninsula. Also includes some typewritten drafts for a book about Christchurch and Canterbury including chapters about Akaroa which includes some laments for Onawe composed by Puwai [also spelt Puai] a survivor of the 1832 raid on Onawe pa. Photographic prints are of a family group including a boy on a rocking horse and a photo of a drawing of a Maori village entitled 'Wataputa. Canterbury Plains 1848. Drawn by W Fox Esq.' Description: Letter to Cowan from Alf Warbrick [Alfred Patchett Warbrick], the Ngati Rangitihi boatbuilder, rugby player and tourist guide, written in 1937 from King George Hospital in Rotorua. A letter from K Pihama dated 1937/38 about some songs or waiata that Cowan had sent her including 'Whakapukepuke'. Also mentions Kehu [aka Chadwick] and his children Wenerata Kehu and Waikura Bell, and grand-daughter Reremoana Bell. A letter from C H Crawford written in 1939 from Papatoetoe, mentions that he grew up in Sumner and would visit Rapaki often to attend church and remembers Hone Taare Tikao and Paora Taki. A letter from I Warbrick and D Sewell written in 1941 mentioning their gratitude at Cowan's financial contribution towards a memorial for a memorial [possibly for Alfred Warbrick]. Description: A studio portrait showing a group of two men Teone Taare Tikao and Hoani Matiu (standing); and two women possibly Hera (Sarah) Te Wahia nee Antoni, and Hana Maaka. They are all wearing traditional clothing including feather cloaks. Each holds a weapon: two taiaha, a tewhatewha and a mere. There are other images in the same series at Te Papa which date the image to 1896. A researcher previously identified Tikao as Hoani Maaka saying it was a "Group of Kai Tahu tipuna from Purakaunui and Puketeraki identified as Hoani and Hana Maaka, Hoani Matiu and Hera Te Wahia' (Email from Otago Museum, 6 April 2011). Earlier personal communication from a researcher identified Tikao as Hori Kerei Taiaroa MP for Southern Maori. This correspondent suggested the 1899 date.
