Punch in Canterbury :What may come of the Masters and Servants Bill. Original question....

Date: 1865

By: Punch in Canterbury (Periodical)

Reference: A-315-967

Description: In the first frame a master, who has just dismounted from a horse, hands a plate of food to a servant who cringes in leg-irons on the floor of a prison cell. In the second frame the master is seen taking a break from cracking rocks in a quarry in order to accept a piece of bread from the overseeer. In the background a man laughs as he reads a copy of the 'Voice of the People'. The master is probably John Cracroft Wilson who was criticised for his one-sided Masters and Servants Bill of 1865. He was MHR for Christchurch (1861--66), Coleridge (1866--70) and Heathcote (1872--75). He was known for his great interest in horses and livestock in general. The cartoon was published in 'Punch in Canterbury' 19 August 1865. Quantity: 1 cartoon bromide(s). Physical Description: A4 size bromide.
