Chatham Islands farmer, interpreter and ethnographer. Son of Archibald Watson Shand. Arrived in Wellington in 1840, and later moved with his family to the Chatham Islands. Became clerk and interpreter to the Resident Magistrate in 1863. Took up sheep farming on the Chathams in 1869. Noted for his studies of the Moriori people. Also known as Te Hana. There is an index at the end of the volume. The volume contains a copy of a letter written by J C Andersen in 1956, which explains the context of the letters and this volume. Quantity: 1 volume(s). Physical Description: Typescript (34 cm; ½ blue calf) Provenance: The original letters were given to J C Andersen, by Crompton Smith. According to a copy of a letter laid into this volume, from Andersen to the then Chief Librarian of the Turnbull Clyde Taylor, Andersen had organised for this copy of the transcriptions of the letters to be added to the Turnbull Library collection. Probably when Andersen was himself the Chief Librarian.
