Description: Includes a preface and translation in S P Smith's hand with a note: `A large part of this has been embodied in "Hist. and Trad. of Taranaki Coast"'. There is also a covering note signed by W H S (W H Skinner) on the provenance of the ms with a genealogy of Teira Whatakore attached. Also includes letter from T M Hocken to Smith, Dunedin 1 Jun 1893, forwarding books and precis of copies or extracts of Colonial Office material, Sep 1835, on the `Alligator' and J Guard affair. The manuscript gives a biographical account of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, with whakapapa, with much information about his role in conflicts between Taranaki and other iwi, and between Taranaki and the Government in the first Taranaki campaign (1860) in the New Zealand wars; the document also discusses the shipwreck `Harriet' and the treatment received by the survivors; there are also translations of the material. Description: Includes photographs of Maori artefacts in museum context. Possibly created by James Edge-Partington, an anthropologist who studied artefacts in New Zealand and the Pacific. This volume is in the same style of album, with similar photographs and articles as Webster album 4 (PA1-o-519) which has Edge-Partington's named bookplate inside the front cover. Studies of a variety of artefacts including an instrument giving a decoy call for kiwi; a sea leopard's tooth carved and worn as a pendant (from Stewart Island); whale teeth pendants; weapons; tools; carved waka, prows of waka; carved meeting houses; Te Kooti's house "Te Waho"; carved storehouses; a Maori kite; eel traps and fish hooks. The artefacts are from various collections in New Zealand and overseas, including the Chapman Collection, the Hamilton Collection, the Hocken Collection and General Robley's Collection. Reports interview of Kataraina Mape, ca 75 years old, and Hori Te Wahia, ca 90 years old, expressing a different version of the background of the name [Murdering Beach] than Hocken had previously understood. 3. Hocken to W H Triggs. Dated 16 Apr 1908. Concerning Craik's `The New Zealanders'. "...undoubtedly an admirable compilation..." 4. Hocken to Charles Wilson. Dated 14 Sept 1909.
