Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. Description: Shows a hand offering an opened packet of Rothmans cigarettes at the right, and a montage of black faces and a shouting white face at the left. Reproduces a "diagrammatic chart" of the chain of control from Rembrandt Controlling Investment in South Africa to Rothmans Tobacco Co in New Zealand. The Rembrandt Group was headed by Anton Rupert who allegedly had close links with the Nationalist Party of South Africa. Description: Georgina Kiripuai Te Aomarere was born in Katihiku, Otaki in 1916. Mentions two years of schooling at Saint Josephs Maori Girls College in Taradale, which ended because of the Great Depression. Recalls they were poor, living off seafood and vegetable gardens. Mentions Mr Pike allowing them into the picture theatre without paying. Talks about her first job working for Miss Grant as a housekeeper, and amount paid. Describes working for Mrs Ossian Death for five years. Refers to a trip to Napier for a camping holiday with the Death family, and the food she prepared. Mentions getting drivers licence, and working at the Otaki Sanatorium. Describes her four years of war work in the Petone cigarette factory, WD & HO Wills, working in the steamery and processing tobacco. Notes that she was called up for the army twice but her employer argued to keep her. Mentions returning to Otaki when she became hapu (pregnant). Describes working for the Amos Softgoods Ltd factory, preparing teas, lunches and baking. Refers to taking her baby to work after her mother died. Describes the factory manager Mr Hager, an alcohol-free Christmas party, benefits for longstanding workers, baking for special occasions, birthday presents, a Scottish factory worker, Maori employment in the factory, working in a factory for 33 years, smoking and work, and the impact of a zip replacing boiling water in pots. Talks about being the only Maori in Otaki who gave blood, explains why others didn't. Mentions having to retire from the factory at age 65, and working in a volunteer capacity for her iwi. Mentions her Uncle Karaha, a tohunga, and her father, Whiti Te Aomarere.
