Description: Shows boys and girls and Mr Monkhouse doing `Public service', clearing flax clumps near swimming bath [at the Friend's School in Wanganui] Scope and contents information taken from note on lower left beneath image The Society of Friend's School in Wanganui was fostered by the enthusiasm of English Friend, John Holdsworth, who became recognised as the Founder of the School, which was opened in Feb. 1920 on 34 acres, with 20 pupils, staffed by Hugh and Annie Goldsbury for its first year. But financial difficulties forced its closure at the end of 1969 and it was later leased by the Education Department as special school for emotionally disturbed boys. Description: Five pages each containing a verse of text, accompanied by an illustration. The text tells a story of a boy who goes to pick an apple for his girl friend, and succeeds despite being frightened by a bear. He is rewarded with a kiss. Quantity: 1 sketchbook(s). Physical Description: Watercolour on pages of sketchbook, buckram bound, 85 x 85 mm. Provenance: The book was handmade by a German "interned alien" on Somes Island, Wellington, New Zealand, during the Second World War. The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) had a permit to visit the island and help the internees and their dependants, and were able to bring some of the crafts they made, and sell them at a stall on their behalf (See note at AT 10/14, 24 September 2001 - copy with sketchbook). Processing information: Transferred from the Dorothy Neal White Collection in 2001.

Description: Wilson Gordon born Dunedin. Recalls upbringing by mother who belonged to an exclusive religion with one of its basic tenets being not to fight. Discusses employment, firstly on a farm and later in railway workshops. Refers to moulding shop which was making bomb cases for the Mills bomb. Talks about balloting process for army and Appeal Board during World War II. Recalls refusing to go on duty around the tankers at the wharf as requested, being summoned to court and getting one months hard labour. Mentions Jack Baxter, nephew of Archibald Baxter. Refers to the Quaker religion which was also against war but with 300 years of that tradition, most of their members were excused. Describes experience and conditions in the various detention camps - Stratmore and Hautu camp. Talks about study opportunities in camp. Discusses post war experience, difficulties of getting employment in a government department and not being allowed to vote.
