Description: Albion flatbed-style printing press, thought to date to 1862. '96 year old printing press built in England in 1862. Used in the Waikato to print a newspaper in Maori to counter a propagandist newsheet published by King Country tribes'. (Note in Donations Book, vol 5. Additional note in pencil) 'Hopkinson Cope Albion Press' . Also known as Te Pihoihoi Mokemoke Other Titles - Te Pihoihoi Mokemoke The newspaper in Maori was edited and published by John Eldon Gorst (1835-1916), who was born in Engalnd and arrived in New Zealand in 1860. It was Gorst's own press that produced the five issues of 'Te pihoihoi mokemoke' before it was forcibly removed by members of the Ngati-maniapoto; Gorst himself was expelled from the Waikato, and eventually returned to England where he became a significant figure in British politics The printing press was returned to the Library in April 2015, with a view to possible restoration Quantity: 1 curio(s). Description: Sir John Gorst and John Logan Campbell on the steps of a Veterans' Home with a group of veterans in their uniforms and wearing their medals. The pillars at the top and bottom of the steps are carved with the names Kitchener, Kenny and MacDonald. A group of three women are looking on the verandah behind them. Photographer unidentified.
