Hutton, Thomas Buddulph, 1824-1886

Reverend Thomas Biddulph Hutton. Anglican clergyman and artist. Arrived in NZ to teach at St John's College, Waimate. Moved to Auckland 1844. Married Sarah, daughter of Henry Williams 1849. Became deacon 1847; took Holy Orders 1853. Helped illustrate journals of Rev W C Cotton. Visited Wellington and the Hutt Valley in 1859. Officiating minister with Robert Cole, Wellington, 1849. His wife gave bith to a daughter on 18 April 1850 at St James' Parsonage, River Hutt (Wellington Independent, 20 Apr 1850, p 2).

Description: A Maori boy, dressed in European clothes, seated on a bed covered with a fringed flax cloak, with pictures pinned to the raupo-covered walls behind him and a jacket hanging from it. Either painted at St John's College, Purewa (Meadowbank, Auckland) during 'Himiona Tu's' time there as a student, or inside the boy's home. Himiona is a transliteration of the European name Simon and suggests the boy has been baptised. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - 14. Ko Himiona Tu [in brownink] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). The artist's inscription also included 'Putiki', which might relate to Putiki Bay on Waiheke. Cabbage trees in the left foreground, and a small group of buildings on the right, likely to be a farm.
