Chun, Doris, 1917-2017

Born in Wellington in 1917, her parents Chun Yee Hop and second wife Wun Chu Yoong (Wun Choy Lin) having emigrated from China a few years previously. Chun Yee Hop and Wun Choy-lin were from Xizhou villag, Zengcheng County.

Spent part of her childhood in China living with her father's first wife. Married Chung Chun Ying, a herbalist and importer, in 1937 and had ten children. Died May 2017.

Description: Papers, and various objects relating to the activities of the Chee Kung Tong (CKT) and Chinese in Wellington. The collection includes items from the Chee Kung Tong, from the Chung's shop, and from the Chung family. Collection includes banners and flags; divining sticks; boxed candles; uniforms worn by members of an orchestra; stringed and wooden musical instruments; percussion instruments used by the orchestra; and printing blocks and an ink grinder likely used in the Chung's shop. Also includes photographic prints of Chinese in Wellington and Chee Kung Tong, and copy negatives and photocopies of prints made by the Library from originals belonging to the donor of the collection. For further information about the CKT and this collection consult the publication that accompanied an Alexander Turnbull Library exhibition on the CKT: `Chee Kung Tong: The Hung League in New Zealand', 1991. A copy is held in the collection backfile. Doris Chung's husband, Chung Dick Lee, was the last president of the New Zealand Chee Kung Tong.
