Description: Items originally in a box Binney labelled 'Prophet photos' Chiefly photographs of Maori grave markers in the Far North district (but also some in Otaki, Onehunga, Matata and Whangara) taken in 1971, 1972, 1975 and 1983 by Kendrick Smithyman. Many show the symbols of the heart, diamond, club and spade and some, or all, of these, may be the work of carver Nutana Mapi. Also a few Pakeha graves. Also includes photographs of other subjects taken by Smithyman: a drawing by Eric Lee-Johnson of a carved wooden grave marker at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Rangiahua; a clock tower at Otago University; a carved wooden altar piece in a church at Motukaraka. Also includes a photograph of Penetana Papahurihia's grave marker taken by historian Ruth Miriam Ross in 1972, and an accompanying letter from Ross to Judith, dated about 1976, noting the inscription on the stone and further details. Also a photograph of a grave marker labelled "ex R S Oppenheim A 'House of the Lord', late (1950s) in a Ratana context, Matauri Bay" Also includes a photograph of the exterior of the Ratana Church at Mangamuka, Far North, taken by Binney in circa 1970s.
