Nga Puhi interpreter, genealogist. Obituary: JPS v53 p107-110. Descended from Ngapuhi, born Waimate North, his father was John Sheppard Stowell who married Huhana (Susannah née Farley, later Boyes), daughter of Maumau who had been married to Matthew Farley, a shipwright. Became a Maori scholar, first as a member of a surveying party and then in the late 1880s when he became an interpreter in the Native Land Courts in Taranaki; he later came to the Native Land department in Wellington; contributed to JPS, gave broadcast talks, published verse. Description: Notebook containing research notes relating to Maori history (particularly food-gathering practices) from around the Taupo area. It seems that Cowan has used Maori Land Court minute books for his information as he attributes the information to land block names and case names, informant names and dates. Some of the people he mentions are: H Tumatara Pio of Te Teko (aged 77 in 1900), Te Waaka Tamaira (Rangatira block, 1884), Hitiri Te Paerata (mentioned several times), Tini Waata, Wineti Paranihi, Aperahama Werewere, Te Heueheu Tukino, and Te Rangitahau. The book also contains information given to him from Hare Hongi about Maori astronomy, makutu, and the moari [swing]. Contains whakapapa, karakia and waiata. Description: Papers, publications, photographs and a postcard relating to Henry Stowell (also known as Hare Hongi). Includes articles, whakapapa and a waiata relating to Stowell's wife's grandmother, Mere Ngamai (Mere Ngamai o te Wharepouri, 1804-1852). This is a photocopy of a painting by Eileen Cowan, with words of a waiata composed by Mere Ngamai which is "a chant of adoration for Mount Egmont" with a translation by James Cowan, and whakapapa of Mere Ngamai. Also includes a postcard of a shining cuckoo/pipiwharauroa, an obituary of Sir James Carroll circa 1926, whakapapa relating to Stowell, Maori grammar notes created by Stowell for his teaching, and a copy of a picture of the iron gunboat Rangiriri. The publications comprise: 'The Hocart papers in the Turnbull Library' by C R H Taylor, published in 1950, and 'New Zealand Centennial 1840-1940' published by the New Zealand Government Department of Tourist and Publicity in 1940. Also includes annotated sheet music for 'Sarabande and allegro' which has a cutting of a picture of Llewellyn Jones attached. Description: Maker(s) unknown. Two kākā pōria, bone (and/or ivory) leg rings for parrots. They were contained in two annotated envelopes which have "Bird snares from Tonga's kainga, Ngaronga [Ngauranga?], given to Mere Ngamai off the mokai kaka's foot" and "Poria kaka, bird ring" written in Henry Stowell's hand. Objects-0953-1 is made of bone, and is a stylised figure of eight shape with serrated edges. It is 45 mm x 30 mm x 5 mm. Objects-0953-2 is (possibly) made of ivory which has brown staining. It is also a stylised figure of eight shape with rounded edges. It is 35 mm x 27 mm x 3 mm. Title supplied by Library.
