Farmer, military leader. Fought in the South African War. Commander of the New Zealand Mounted Brigade in Palestine and Egypt, 1916-1918. Retired from the position of G. O. C. of the New Zealand Army in 1924. Awarded KCMG, KCVO and CB. Son of John Clervaux and Emma Chaytor. See DNZB (Vol 3, 1901-1920, p93-95, C13)

The three female teachers have been identified as E M Pigott, M E Virtue, and E M Allen. There are two male teachers in the photograph. Description: Programme booklet for an event, the proceeds of which were in aid of the Auckland Military Sports Association. The front cover illustrated by W R Lethbridge whose signature is at lower left, shows a New Zealand flag, the figure of Britannia wearing a winged helmet, and a beefeater standing behind her. Native berries and oak leaves are shown at left and the whole is within an ornate border of leaves. Events listed inside included a pageant of people dressed as: (Army) Crusaders, longbowmen, archers, cannoniers, pikemen, halberdiers, yeomen of the guard, marines, Roundheads, Cavaliers, guardsmen; (Navy) Alfred & men, Men of the Cinque Ports, King Harry and men 1415, Drake and men 1572, Frobiher and men 1567, Lord Collingwood and men, Nelson and men 1798, (Women) Britannia, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth, Joan of Arc. Album recording World War 1914-1918 campaigns in the Middle East

Description: This album relates to the British campaign against the Turks in north-eastern Egypt and Palestine, 1916-1917. Charles Powles compiled a detailed record of his experience of these events up to the taking of Jerusalem in albums PA1-q-604, PA1-q-605. This Album should be read in relation to them. They are more of a sequential record of the military campaign; this has a greater focus on people and scenic places. It begins with Cairo, then moves north and finishes in Jaffa. Jaffa was in control of the British forces by November 1917, but British possession of the town was not secured until late December, after the capture of Jerusalem. Because Jerusalem does not appear in this album, the Jaffa pictures were probably taken in November 1917. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s).
