McIntosh, Alister Donald Miles (Sir), 1906-1978
McIntosh, A D, 1906-1978
Librarian, senior public servant, diplomat. Known as 'Mac'. Credited with the building of the New Zealand diplomatic service post World War II.
Secretary to the War Cabinet, 1943-1945, Secretary External Affairs and Permanent Head of Prime Minister's Department, 1943-1966. Appointed New Zealand's first ambassador to Rome in 1965.
After retirement, McIntosh served in a number of public roles, including Chair of the Trustees of the National Library of New Zealand, the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and the Broadcasting Council of New Zealand. Knighted in 1973.
Husband of Doris McIntosh, 1934-1979 (née Pow).

Description:
Three views of a man holding a portrait on an ivy covered doorstep, two of the reverse and one of the front. The inscription on the reverse of the portrait says Captain J Cook 1770. However, a note on the file prints says that the portrait was found by the donor in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1968 and is clearly not Captain Cook the explorer. Photographer unidentified.
