St. Andrew's on the Terrace (Church : Wellington, N.Z.)

Scotch Kirk (Church : Wellington, N.Z.)

St Andrews was the first Presbyterian Church in New Zealand and was unique amongst Presbyterian churches in New Zealand in that it was established prior to the `Disruption' of the Church Of Scotland in 1843. After 1843 St Andrews retained its association with the Established Church of Scotland while other New Zealand Presbyterian churches were associated with the Reformed Church. In 1874 St Andrews terminated its ecclesiastical connection with the Established Church and became a member of the General Assembly. The `Scotch Kirk' was established by the Rev John Macfarlane who arrived at Petone on the `Bengal Merchant' on 20 February 1840, the first service being held on the beach on Sunday 23 February. During the next two months services were held at various places in the Hutt. Towards the end of April the Church moved to Wellington where the congregation met in a variety of buildings until 1844. In that year the Scotch Kirk opened a new building on Lambton Quay. This building was replaced by a larger church on the same site in 1866. In the meantime the congregation had acquired the name St Andrews. In 1878 the new wooden church on the Terrace was opened. As the result of a fire in August 1920 the Church was completely gutted and a new concrete building was opened on the same site in February 1923.
