Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in Greece, Crete, the Middle East and Egypt during World War 2, 1939-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official use. This album includes a number of official photographs taken for the British official records. Many of the personnel identified are listed above, but group portraits in which individuals are identified are not listed above. Many views show aspects of military training in the desert, including machine guns, rifles, manoeuvres, Bren guns, range practice, and anti-tank guns. New Zealand Divisional Cavalry. In England military training and preparation includes scenes of the New Zealand High Commissioner in London, William Joseph Jordan, watching New Zealand lumberjacks from the New Zealand Forestry Corps in a Gloucester forest felling trees for war purposes. Also related to England are scenes of the Duke of Gloucester inspecting troops, and King George VI at an investiture at Buckingham Palace investing Flight-Sergeant Williams with his Distinguished Flying Medal for gallantry in air operations. Long Range Desert patrols and expeditions into enemy territory showing the difficult terrain they had to negotiate. Views of a formation of five American-built Lockheed Hudson aircraft of the RAF Coastal Command carrying out an action patrol near Borkum, Heligoland and the Danish Coast. They are the first released photographs taken while under fire from German anti-aircraft ships, flying only 200 ft above the sea because of the weather (p 15-21). One image shows a wireless operator checking one of H.M. the King's homing pigeons, presented to the RAF to carry messages in case of a forced landing & breakdown of wireless. Arrival of NZ airmen & pilots for duty with the RAF in 1941. Gift of fruit and vegetables presented to NZ troops stationed in Fiji, transported 60 miles by boat from Kandavu, formally accepted by Brigadier Cunningham. (A number of images of Cunningham are dotted throughout the album). Views of the sinking of the Italian raider Ramb I, by HMS Leander in February 1941 (p 33-37). Scenes of a huge field bakery run by Egyptian bakers which can supply 3500 loaves each day. Also the "Waiwera Hotel - the 'ouse on the 'ill" cookhouse in the desert; and other scenes of food preparation. Relaxation organised by the YMCA, and the opening of the Lowry Hut run by the YMCA. Shipboard life on a transport ship, including games, relaxation and officers censoring mail. Floods after heavy rain in the Western Desert along the Mediterranean fringe (p 61-64). The Oranje leaving Amsterdam on her maiden voyage; used as hospital ship for Australian and New Zealand forces. Groups at the Royal Canadian Air Force Bombing and Gunnery School, all of whom are named (p 67-69). Prime Minister Peter Fraser's visit to the Middle East (p 69-72), his visit to Greece (p 93-105), and inspecting the hospital ship Maunganui (p110-111).) The No. 1 General Hospital in Greece. Group portrait of New Zealanders in Britain training for the Fleet Air Arm (members named). Members of the New Zealand Bomber Squadron of the RAF who have been part of the raids on Germany, particularly on Berlin. (Several group portraits, some of which are named). Description: Photographs of military activities and war work in New Zealand during World 2, 1939-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official use. This album contains photographs on pages 1-54 (Pages 55-149 are empty). Activities include training in building of fascines and revetments for protecting trench walls; barbed wire "concertina"; excavation of command posts (part of a defensive trench system); the use of a 2" mortar; anti-tank rifle instruction; instruction in identifying enemy weapons including grenades and land mines and use of an electric mine detector. The cookery wing in action in the open air; artillery school of instruction; signallers establishing communication & erecting a telegraph pole; use of a 25-pounder; bayonet practice; medical training including rescue of wounded, use of an improvised stretcher, improvised raft for a river crossing carrying the stretcher, transfer to an ambulance, and finally a view of an actual open-air operation. The arrival of Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt, shown with New Zealand dignitaries (p 18). Men and women who have returned on furlough parading through Wellington on their way to a luncheon given in their honour by the RSA (p 19-21, 38-40); the arrival of repatriated Prisoners of War being greeted by friends and family in Wellington (p 33-36) A huge crowd celebrating the victory over the Italians at Liberty Corner, on the intersection of Hunter Street, Featherston Street and Lambton Quay (Friday 3rd September 1943) Ceremonies at an undentified marae including Maori dance, haka, poi dances and speeches by military officers. Pages 28-30 show the visit of a British Military Mission to the Forest & Jungle Warfare Wing of the Army School of Instruction, with demonstrations of jungle training. Women are shown with views of the Women's Land Service (Land Army), and also as Post & Telegraph drivers collecting huge bags of mail from a ship. Infantry students at the Army School, Trentham are shown in a river crossing exercise near Foxton, building rafts big enough to carry people, vehicles and weaponry. Launching a fuel barge built at the Wellington Patent Company's shipyards at Evans Bay, where the ceremony was performed by Managing Director Mr Jamieson. Pages 49-53 show photographs of Polish refugee children arriving and settling into the refugee camp at Pahiatua. Pages 53 and 54 show the official opening of a new Model Kindergarten in Hospital Road, Newtown (Saturday 18th November, 1943), opened by the Prime Minister Peter Fraser. Also present were the Labour MP for Wellington South, Robert Mckeen and his wife Jessie Mckeen, Mrs J A Doctor (President of the Free Kindergarten Association), and Dr Clarence Beeby (Director of Education). Below the shield are the words "Nil intentatum reliquit" on a banner. The shield is surrounded by blue and gold scrolls and surmounted with the visored helmet from a suit of armour. Above the helmet is a wreath of a twist of blue and gold and green leaves, with and without red berries, from which rises an arm clad in British naval uniform blue. The hand is holding a Union Jack and the words "Circa Orbem" appear on a pink banner behind the flag. Quantity: 1 curio(s). Two men sing beside a beer barrel, beer bottles rise on wings, a man tries to persuade a girl to come to the cemetery with him, a woman throws a wet missile at a man boarding a train ("The Royal Soak"), and the scene is filmed by a man from the National Film Unit. Assumed to be drawn by Neville Rykers when he was an engineering student at Auckland University. He may have travelled to a University Easter Sports Tournament in another city.
