[Barraud, Charles Decimus] 1822-1897 :[Thorndon, Wellington. 1856?]

Date: 1856

Reference: B-004-005

Description: Unfinished sketch from the slopes below the lower end of The Terrace, looking north down on Lambton Quay (the beach), close to Molesworth and Murphy Streets, modern Thorndon Quay and Pipitea Point. The half-dozen buildings along Lambton Quay just before Molesworth Street can be seen. They include Alzdorf's Wellington Hotel, one of the two-storied buildings immediately below the foreground garden. Further to the right is Barrett's Hotel (the two-storied building with the upper storey set back from the front. The large building that appears to be some distance behind Barretts has been identified in the past as St Paul's Church School Room. However the original school room was a fairly small building not a tall cruciform building like the one shown here, which is more likely to be the first St Paul's Church on the site of Old St Paul's Mulgrave Street. The flagpole on the front lawn of Government House is also visible, as are two jetties. St Paul's Church School Room was originally on a bank, more or less behind Barrett's Hotel. It had to be moved onto more stable ground, into Sydney Street (now Kate Sheppard Place). A clay bank can be seen behind Barrett's in this view and the School Room may be the roof just sketched in behind Barretts. The first St Paul's Church in Mulgrave Street was replaced by the current 'Old St Paul's' in 1864. Dating: a more finished watercolour version of this drawing, 'Wellington; Thorndon from The Terrace' (C-162-001) is dated 1856. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Pencil & watercolour 254 x 355 mm
