Description: In closely-written pages, Card describes in detail his voyage on HMS `Fantome' to Sydney, where he transhipped to the `Havannah' on 24 Nov 1851. He describes his voyages to and around New Zealand, to Fiji and Tonga, before returning to Australia and New Zealand in November 1853, where his captain died. He writes of his life and loves in Sydney and Brisbane from 1854 to Mar 1855, when he is reposted to England. Description: Contains a logbook kept by R F Gambier a midshipsman aboard the `HMS Dauntless', commanded by Captain George C Gambier. The log book records the voyage to the Pacific or `South Seas' in 1821-1822, with details of weather conditions encountered. There are also details of landings throughout the Pacific including Huahini, Tahiti. Also included is a night order book kept by RF Gambier while he was commander aboard the `HMS Satellite' and the `HMS Sappho' for voyages aimed at suppressing the slave trade around Africa during the 1840s. Description: Diagrammatic map drawn on higher ground overlooking the scene where the HMS Buffalo navy ship was wrecked ('28th July 1840, at 10 am'). Map shows the site was wrecked, in a flat, sandy beach area, the thickly wooded hills behind it, the encampment of those who were in the wrecked ship, points on the beach where parts of the ship were washed ashore, and an area of flat marshy ground. Also depicted is the neighbouring pa site (maori village) of the Chief Teraroa, ('Teraroa's hippah'), the encampment of the part of the Buffalo's crew 'who were employed in the firest, preparing the cargo, Mercury River, part of Wiritianga's pa site, as well as Mr Brown's wharf-store and settlement ('Buffalo's store's were landed there'). Description: Shows naval battle scene with a galleon sinking in the foreground and men clinging to pieces of wreckage; another has been dismasted while the remaining are engaged in battle. Posiedon is shown in the lower righthand side surveying the scene being enacted before him. In 1708 Commodore Wagner with a small squadron attacked a fleet of galleons on their way from Port Bello to Carthagena.
