Te Ropere, 1840-1930

Soldier, artist and author. Born Madeira. Arrived Auckland from Madrid on 4 January 1864 as ensign in 68th Durham Light Infantry. Was present at Gate Pa and Te Ranga, Tauranga, 1864. Left New Zealand for England with his regiment in 1865, but continued to paint and draw portraits of Maori, images of moko and scenes relating to the war and to Maori culture for many years. Published Moko: or Maori tattooing, London, 1896, and Pounamu: notes on New Zealand greenstone in London in 1915. Many of his drawings were used as sources for wood engravings in the Illustrated London news and Graphic in the mid-1860s and later. He retired as a Major-General in London in 1887 (Sources: Platts, Una. Description: Copy of a carving of a chief and his wife greeting each other. The woman has more tattooing on her face than was customary in Robley's day in the 1860s. The forehead moko is `Maketu' and the mouth moko is `Ngaiterangi'. Shoulders are covered with whakairo. The carving was taken to England by Lord Onslow and put up ay Clandon Park, Surrey. Description: A Maori man and two women seated outside a carved gateway and the palisade of Maketu Pal, near Tauranga. The woman in the white skirt has been identified as Hineaturama, Phillip Tapsell's third wife. The seated man with the spear to the right is Hikaroa. The dog in the foreground was sent from Denmark to Philip Tapsell in New Zealand by his brother. It was a Dutch barge dog. The gate shown in this view is now in the Vienna Museum. In the centre, an elevation of the palisade in front of the pa, with the flag flying above the palisade to the left.
