Silent screen actress, theatre actress, radio broadcaster, journalist, hostess. Born in Hunterville, she and her husband Maurie Luxford emigrated in 1919 to the United States, where she was to reside until her death. She later married William Bauernschmidt (1927), and Glen Dolberg (1960). As an actress she featured in many motion pictures during the 1920s. In the 1930s she became a broadcaster in New York, and was the first woman to broadcast a sports event (the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games). She was also the first woman member of the US National Broadcasting Corporation's Coast to Coast news team until the outbreak of war in 1939. In 1940 she created an ANZAC Garden on top of the British Empire building in New York. In 1941 she started the ANZAC Club, in her apartment, and later in the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity house, to house, feed and entertain New Zealand and Australian servicemen. She was Director of the Anzac War Relief Fund in America. Luxford also hosted the `ANZAC Hour' broadcasts, in which servicemen read out messages to their friends and families. The shows were broadcast, initially via records Luxford mailed to New Zealand and Australian broadcasting companies, and later through direct broadcast. From the 1950s until her death, Luxford was involved in community work and charitable organisations. She won many awards and certificates for her work, including an OBE in 1947. See DNZB (Vol 4, 1921-1940, p298-300, L20). Series of photographs of Nola Luxford held in NZ Free Lance Collection (PAColl-0785-1-113)
