Description: Memoir of service during World War One written by James McMillan who served with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles and transcribed by E D McCabe. He wrote the memoir in the late 1960s and includes his views on how New Zealand entered the war and what it meant to serve in the forces. He describes training, leaving for the Middle East, the Battle of Surafend, contact and trouble with local people, life as a soldier, the various locations they found themselves in. He also includes a list of the horses and riders in the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Racing Club meeting at Rafa (5 Feb 1919). Description: The memoir describes Horner's experiences from November 1913 until May 1919. He sailed to Canada from Auckland on 22 November 1913 and worked on the construction of the Great Eastern Railway to the north of Vancouver from May 1914 to May 1916 when he travelled by rail to New York and then on by sea to Liverpool to enlist in the British Army. He was commissioned into the Royal Artillery Territorial Force and served until the end of the war with units of the Royal Artillery. Horner saw action at Cape Hellas on the Gallipoli Pennusular from November 1915 until January 1916 when he was evacuated to Egypt. During 1916 he served with the artillery in the campaign against Turkish forces in the Middle East. In February 1917 he sailed for France and spent the rest of the war fighting on the Western Front where he was awarded the Military Cross. Horner received his discharge from the army in Feb 1919 and arrived back in New Zealand on 29 May 1919. Horner, a New Zealand surveyor and civil engineer worked on railway construction in Canada, 1914-1915 and then served with the Royal Artilley in the First World War, 1915-1919.
