Description: Album with pages shaped to allow photographs to be inserted into oval or rectangular slots, empty except for five images near the end of the album. One is of two unidentified people wearing native costume; the other four are lithographs of the four criminals involved in the Maungatapu murders in 1866. The men were members of the Burgess gang, Richard Burgess, Thomas Kelly, Philip Levy and Joseph Sullivan. Inscriptions: Album page - `Mrs H A White from her loveing son Henery, August 4th '69 [i.e. [1869]' Some authorities say Theophilus Mabille was the artist. Copies of the portraits can also be found in `A series of sketches illustrating the principal incidents in connection with the Maungatapu murders, with portraits of the prisoners from photographs taken in Nelson Gaol / drawn by Hodgson & Friend', Nelson, Old Post Office, [1866]. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Brian Martin; extracts from the shipboard diary Henry Martin kept on board the `Clontarf'; essay entitled `The Martins 1859-2008' giving the history of the farm and family; land documents and cadastral maps; photographs of family and farm; family tree; extracts from various publications; poems; extracts from 1916 farm diary kept by Victor Martin (d 1918). See MS-Papers-9389-31 for published summary & photographs. Original owner was Henry Martin from Staffordshire who arrived in New Zealand on the `Clontarf' in 1858 with his wife Sarah and daughter Ellen. In 1860 with Sarah's inheritance they bought Wrens Nest, East Eyreton, 6 miles from Kaiapoi. Henry died in 1898 and his wife and daughter continued to farm at Wrens nest until 1901 when they were tragically murdered by Alastair McLean, a tramp Mrs Martin had hired to help with the farm work after Henry's death. Her son George took possession of the farm. In 2008 the farm was owned by Henry's great great grandson Brian Martin. In 2008 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Recalls his work on Levin Boys (Correctional) Training Farm, his appointment to the Police Force in 1940 and his attitude to the police and his training. Describes the `beat' and night shift in Wellington during World War II and reasons for being on that shift; uniforms; day and night shift rotation and nature of his duties while on the `beat' in the entertainment and business area. Recalls the impact of American soldiers on shore leave and his experience with them. Describes relations between US Marines and New Zealand girls and tensions between US and New Zealand males in Wellington. Describes the `Battle of Manners Street' and his involvement in it. Recalls the Crawford double murder as evidence of further tension between Marines and New Zealand males; breaking of liquor restrictions at clubs and dances; other forms of wartime entertainment and the introduction of canned fruit juice to New Zealand. Talks about his resignation from the Police Force in 1945 with reference to senior Sergeant Curran and return to the Police in 1947. Describes his duties form 1956 to 1976 as a court orderly with special duties in the Supreme Court as Jury Supervisor. Talks about stresses as a policeman as regards family life and the threat of physical violence. Discusses methods of dealing with fights and other dangerous situations. Description: The image shows David Bain sitting in one pan in a balance while in the other sit three clowns named 'Talkback', 'Vox pops' and 'Media pundits'. The second pan weighs heavier than the David Bain pan and represents the 'downside' of the David Bain trial. Refers to the retrial of David Bain who was imprisoned for 13 years for the murders of his parents and three siblings. The retrial found him not guilty.
