Creator unknown :Photograph album of amateur radio stations

Date: 1924-1927

By: Fraser, Grahame (Dr), active 1950s-2000s

Reference: PA1-o-1765

Description: Photograph album of New Zealand amateur radio stations in the 1920s compiled by an unidentified person There are two parts to this album, each having different coloured and sized pages. The first part includes photographs of amateur radio stations with the main focus on the operating equipment and displays of printed call signs. The call signs for the radio stations depicted are 4AO. OZ-2XB. 2BL (1924). Z-4AR. 2GA. Z-1AO. 1AZ. 2GJ. Z-2AV. One photograph is not of amateur radio equipment. The call sign for this is VLW and is the sign for the government radio station initially, in 1911, located in the General Post office in Wellington, and then moved to the station on Tinakori Hill that opened in 1912. Another group of photographs in this section of the album show equipment on display, possibly in the electrical and engineering laboratories at the University of Canterbury. These photographs have no identifying call signs, and the architectural details seem to relate to those in a group of photographs in the second part of the album. Also included is a view of a collapsed aerial pylon at the goverment radio station on Tinakori Hill, Wellington, and two views of the radio station under construction on Mount Victoria, Wellington, that was used by 2YA. There are three photographs of people in this section of the album, none of whom are identified. The second part of the album includes photographs of scientific apparatus and a wooden model relating to the phenomenon called Newton's rings. There are also photographs recording a display of wireless equipment in what are probably the University of Canterbury's electrical and engineering laboritories. This display was for a meeting of the Astronomical society in 1927. There are only two dates recorded in the album - 1924 and 1927. These dates are probably pretty accurate in relation to the call signs for stations depicted in the photographs. Regulations relating to amateur radio stations in New Zealand came into force in January 1923. These divided the country into four radio districts with the prefix numbers one to four for Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. Thus if a radio call sign had the prefix number 4 as in 4AO it meant that it was located in Dunedin district, and was formulated after January 1923. By 1924 with amateur radio operators communicating across the globe, it became necessary for each country to be given an identifying prefix letter. The letter for New Zealand was Z, so call signs with a Z- prefix are 1924 and after. In 1927 the alphabet had been used up so the International Amateur Radio Union decided that an additional letter would be added to identify continents and regions. Oceania, which included New Zealand, was allocated the letter O. Thus call signs with the prefix letters OZ- date from 1927 and after. This held until 1929 when by international agreement the regional prefix was dropped and countries were allocated national two letter prefixes. New Zealand was assigned prefixes from ZK to ZM from which it selected ZL. None of the call signs in the album have the ZL prefix which means that they date from before 1929. (Information from `Ham Shacks, Brass Pounders & Rag Chewers: A history of amateur radio in New Zealand, Ian Dougherty, New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters in association with Historical Branch, Department of Internal Affairs, 1997, pp 30-32). Source of title - Title supplied by Library Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Provenance: The album had been given to Bernie Withers, a lecturer in electronics in the Canterbury University College Department of Electrical Engineering, by Eric Mangin, a photographic and lecture demonstration technician at the Canterbury University College Physics Department. It is not known how Mr Mangin acquired the album.
