Description: Interview with Des (Desmond) Gate, born in Grey Lynn in 1924. Explains how he became interested in photography at secondary school. Mentions joining the Air Force in World War II, and finding quarter plate cameras that needed glass plates. Comments that both roll film and glass plates were used by the military during the War. Refers to transferring to Ohakea in 1946 and joining the photography hobby section. Talks about buying plates, photographing aircraft, and developing the plates and roll films. Describes setting up a darkroom at home after he left the Air Force and getting supplies from the local chemist. Comments on working for many years at Kempthorne Prosser where he could get chemicals for photographic developing. Describes how photographs were developed and printed at the time. Talks about photographic paper available in the 1950s. Mentions converting his plate camera into a horizontal enlarger and buying a Davis enlarger. Recalls his first colour film and describes developing it. Talks about an electronic flash unit he bought and the problems of using it with cameras that lacked automatic exposure. Discusses specialising in landscape and animal photography. Comments that his range of subjects broadened as faster film became available. Explains entering photographs in the Auckland Show photographic exhibitions and submitting prints to English photography magazines.
