Description: Cartoon shows a figure representing New Zealand with a stinking pot of ordure labelled "The Rainbow agents" turned upside down on his head. A Frenchman wearing a beret is standing at the right, berating him. This relates to the fact that the two French agents who participated in the sinking of the ship 'Rainbow Warrior' were imprisoned in New Zealand, despite French objections. In 1986 the agents were in fact deported to the French territorial Pacific island of Hao, to complete their prison sentence. Quantity: 1 original cartoon(s). Description: Contains two extended accounts of Shepherd's experiences while on active service during 1916. The first, dated 20 July 1916 commences in April and describes sailing from Egypt to France aboard the ex-cattle transport `Cestrian' with the New Zealand Division's horses and his experiences in the line from May in the vicinity of Armentieres. He describes the war damaged towns and the local civilian population, the Allied infantry and his duties delivering ammunition to the artilery by horse transport. The second, undated account describes Shepherd's experiences up until December 1916. From September the New Zealand Division took part in a major offensive on the Somme. Once again he describes the effect of the fighting on the civilian population and gives an account of the part played by the artillery and infantry in the battle as well as describing his transport duties. Shepherd left New Zealand on 9 October 1915 with reinforcements for the Auckland Mounted Rifles Quantity: 1 volume(s) (42 leaves). 0.02 Linear Metres.
