Description: Comprises drawings possibly by J M Henderson of symbols used by T W Ratana as part of his religious practice, and later used to illustrate Henderson's book on Ratana. The dominant symbol is the Whetu Marama - a five pointed star with a crescent moon underneath enclosing `T W Ratana', and the letters A (Alpha) and O (Omega) on the left and right sides, where the crescent meets the side points of the star. Other symbols are a bird, a man standing between two whales, a plane and a car, Maunga Taranaki, a ship, clasped hands, clover leaf, a rosette and a patu (club). Some drawings have notes explaining the symbols' meanings and some have explanation for the colours used. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Bronze death plaque, popularly known as the 'soldier's penny' or the 'dead man's penny', showing an image of Britannia holding a trident and standing with a lion. She holds an oak wreath in her outstretched right hand, below which is a rectangular tablet bearing the deceased's name. Two dolphins swim around Britannia, symbolising Britain's sea power, and at the bottom a second lion is tearing apart the German eagle. Around the picture are the words 'He died for freedom and honour'; the reverse is blank. The maker's initials, E. Cr. P., are engraved above the lion's front paw. The plaquette was awarded to John Readhead's next of kin after his death in the Great War The plaquette, of which about 1,355,000 were issued, was the result of a public competition. The winner was the medallist and sculptor Edward Carter Preston, of Liverpool, who gave his design the title 'Pyramus'. The plaques were made in London from 1919, and issued up until the 1930s. A number were made to provide for women who lost their lives, of which about 600 were issued. Quantity: 1 curio(s).
