Description: Transcription by Colin Bassett of diary kept by Gunner James Stubbs in World War Two beginning with an account of his military service from 1940 to 1943 when the diary begins (21 Nov 1943) and finishing 1 Jun 1944, shortly before his death in Wellington 10 Jun 1944 Stubbs describes his enlistment and training from 1940 to 1943 when he left New Zealand on the `Nieuw Amsterdam', arriving in Egypt in Aug 1943; he describes the voyage, places visited, and Cairo, then sailing to Italy and serving there including Cassino. Description: Photographs relating to the military service of three brothers during World War II, circa 1941-1946, particularly images including Leonard Sugden Bumby (who served in the army in Egypt), but a few relating to George Cyril Bumby (army in New Zealand) and John Bumby (navy). Also includes a photograph of Private William Frank Hankins (Bill). Len, George and John are identified but many images are not. Most are not dated and the photographer(s) are unidentified. Includes images of Len when he worked at the base bakery in Egypt. Includes images from tourist destinations, including the Sphinx, the Pyramids, a dhow and a landscaped garden. Also some scenes with statues of Buddha. Includes many images of soldiers in Egypt drinking beer and socialising, with Len Bumby identified. Also includes one image of George Bumby with a kit bag, near Auckland Railway Station in 1942 and an image of George Bumby participating in a battle reenactment. Two images are taken in 1922 and circa 1922 and show groups of sailors from HMS Chatham. One group identified as taken at Trentham Camp in Upper Hutt and the other group are undertaking coaling work.
