Description: Mate Sisley was born at Otakiri on 4 March 1950. She grew up in a large extended family in Otakiri and was largely raised by her maternal grandparents after her father had an accident. Describes her schooling, going to secretarial college and working at Tasman Pulp and Paper. Talks about what her siblings are doing now. Describes her marriage and moving to Wellington with her husband. Recalls working for Robert Muldoon, socialising with him and being the only Maori working for the National Party. Describes having her children, the death of her husband in a car accident and its effect on her. Talks about the day of the earthquake and her job as secretary to the Mayor and Council at the time of the earthquake. Notes that the Council was meeting at the time. Describes the Council buildings being set up as Civil Defence headquarters. Comments on the role of Wira Gardiner. Talks about returning home and going to see her children at a relative's house. Describes taking the children to Rotorua and cleaning the mess at her house. Describes disorganisation and alienation and recalls that it took a few days before people developed a community spirit. Description: Ivan Parke was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 9 September 1952. Recalls growing up in Belfast and serving in various occupations including the Royal Air Force and British Police before coming to New Zealand. Recalls immigrating in 1979, joining the New Zealand Police and being a policeman in Gisborne before going to Edgecumbe. Reflects on the role of policeman in a small town. Comments on the absence of a civil defence structure in Edgecumbe. Talks about being at the physiotherapist with back problems at the time of the earthquake,taking pain killers and heading out on the job. Recalls working for three days before sleeping. Talks about helping people who were trapped, getting an injured woman helicoptered to Tauranga and the urgent priority to seal off the area round Bay Milk products where there had been chemical spillage. Talks about the exposure of shops in the Edgecumbe Mall and setting up volunteers for security work. Describes all power, sewerage and water facilities as destroyed. Talks about setting people up before nightfall at the Cosmopolitan Club. Comments on the help of local marae. Notes that police communication systems failed and police and Civil Defence in Whakatane were unaware of the scale of the problem in Edgecumbe. Comments on the role of his wife in the emergency and the help of the Army. Recalls organising a house by house check. Talks about the power of the earthquake. Comments that the community coped well and took initiative. Describes tent communities. Discusses the potential danger of the Matahina Dam collapsing and the need to assess whether to evacuate people. Talks about insurance. Describes post earthquake exhaustion. Description: Ron Russell was born in Raetihi on 3 November 1939. Talks about his family and describes growing up in Raetihi, Gisborne, Coromandel, Thames and Morrinsville. Talks about starting a watchmaker's apprenticeship but having to give that up. Recalls beginning work at the Morrinsville Dairy Factory, doing a Diploma in Dairy Technology at Massey University and working at the Dairy Research Institute before joining the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Company. Notes that this is now Bay Milk Products. Describes being Site Manager and the most senior person on the site at the time of the earthquake. Describes the town of Edgecumbe and its `mill town' atmosphere. Comments on preparation for fire and floods but not earthquakes. Recalls earthquake weather and a swarm of earthquakes before the major earthquake. Describes being at work when it struck and the sight and noise of five huge stainless steel milk silos and other equipment falling. Comments that all the staff were thrown to the ground. Describes injuries in the factory and office, checking the whole building and dealing with chemical spillage. Commends Jim Goulden and others who isolated the boiling oil and turned off the chlorine gas. Describes trying to contact his milk tanker drivers throughout the countryside. Talks about the shock amongst his staff and how long people were affected. Comments on his family's reaction to the earthquake. Talks about the Edgecumbe bridge and the decision to declare it safe. Recalls the help of the Salvation Army and the Fire Service, the slow response of Civil Defence, insurance issues, rebuilding part of the factory and the long term effect on the community. Description: Esme Kissock was born at Stanthorpe, Queensland on 6 May 1936. Describes growing up in Australia where she worked eleven years as a nurse. Recalls coming to New Zealand on a working holiday and meeting and marrying Alan Kissock, a Kawerau forester, in 1965. Describes living in and around Edgecumbe since then. Talks about involvement in voluntary work including work with the CAB, Playcentre, church and hospice movement. Gives details of the earthquake, the return home of her family and the reaction of her daughter. Comments on water supply and the fear that the Matahina dam would collapse. Talks about the way in which Maori and Pakeha coped. Describes the work of Civil Defence. Recalls her involvement in establishing a programme for children to do painting as therapy. Comments on the feeling of the community pulling together which gave way, over a period of time, to frustration at the slowness of rectifying some things.
